About Us
The Cemaes Bay Website

The Cemaes Bay Heritage Centre created by the community company Cwmni Cemaes Cyf. is where it all happens. Our Telecentre, open to the public, provides internet access and other I.T. services. As a group of volunteers we created and continually update the Cemaes Website.

Other volunteers with a keen interest in the history of the village create and maintain the exhibits on display in our Heritage Room.

When you're finished looking at the photographs and e-mailing friends and family back home, you can sit and relax in the tea room (or outside - weather permitting) with a slice of locally made bara brith and look through brochures from the tourist information area, of other things to do while on your stay.

The efforts of Cwmni Cemaes don't end there. We have created and maintain the young Cemaes Woodland and provide support for other projects in the community including the highly successful Cemaes In Bloom.

The purpose of this website is to assist Cwmni Cemaes in its purpose to promote and support village activities and encourage trade and tourism in the area.

We have received some funding via grants but continually rely on donations and membership subscriptions, which currently stand at over 150 individuals. All members have a voice in the company and a chance to offer their assistance and any expertise they may have to drive us forward.

You too can support our efforts by becoming a member or making a donation - click here.

How it all began...

Back in early 1995, local residents were fired with the idea of doing something to put Cemaes on the map, encourage visitors and generally liven the local community. Support was applied for the project from the Leader II initiative - a European initiative set up to help rural communities.

Meetings were arranged with leaders of local community groups, Menter Môn and Community Enterprise Wales and in this, and subsequent meetings it was resolved to develop a strategic plan for Cemaes, of which the first project was the production of a Cemaes Guide and Handbook and to examine the flexibility of encouraging willow farming, in the locality, to produce willow as a biomass fuel.

In addition to the above, other people are and have been involved in the website over the years including Ken Foley and a number of young trainees who we gave work experience to.

With help and guidance from North Wales Tourism, we produced "The Essential Guide to Cemaes" (see the Online Shop for more details), funded by Menter Môn. A feasibility study on willow growing was initiated and undertaken with the help of UCNW.

By June, 1996, initiatives and ideas had developed into a need to form a legal entity, with a name and declared purpose and by the end of that year, CWMNI CEMAES CYF was formed, to take forward numerous projects, namely those mentioned, the production of a Cemaes Celtic Festival and a place within the village as company HQ - to be known as the Cemaes Heritage Centre.

We held our first international festival in August 1997 and it was a great success artistically and commercially. Funded by grant aid  from Menter Môn and help from BNLF Wylfa, Anglesey Aluminium and other commercial enterprises. It cost approximately £30,000 and we finished with a surplus and enthusiasm to produce a second festival in 1998.

In mid 1997, following the closure of the National Westminster Bank in the village, the premises were purchased and plans were laid to establish a Tea Room, Heritage Gallery and Telecentre, to provide IT facilities to residents and visitors alike.

We have more than 150 members, a Board of Directors (elected each November at the AGM), no debts, other than loans from individuals, and a strong financial basis, but we still need the help that members and donators can provide - click here..
